Biography
Dr. Amml Hussein is an assistant professor in Temple University's School of Social Work. A seasoned social worker, educator and researcher, Dr. Hussein brings more than 12 years of service experience in several practice domains including medical and hospital social work, utilization management, complex managed care, psychiatric crisis stabilization, the justice system, and higher education.
Dr. Hussein is committed to improving the college student experience, with particular emphasis on the second and third years, and increasing institutional responsiveness to students. Her teaching philosophy is centered in activated learning, where she extends course concepts beyond the classroom and situates dialogues in broader international and global contexts. Dr. Hussein researches the relationship between achievement goal orientation and student outcomes including collegiate GPA and student retention during the undergraduate years. Some of Dr. Hussein’s research interests include integrating anti-oppressive and empowerment models into curriculum and instruction, social and emotional predictive models and the science of student success, health promotion strategies geared to alleviating health disparities, and enhancing adult learner engagement infusing innovative teaching modalities and technology.
Dr. Hussein earned her doctorate in educational leadership and administration at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania, College of Education. She earned her master’s degree in social work at the Rutgers Graduate School of Social Work on the clinical track, with an area of emphasis in violence against women and children. Dr. Hussein holds a bachelor’s degree in two major areas of study: journalism and media studies and social work with a minor in psychology from the Rutgers School of the Arts and Sciences, New Brunswick. She graduated from the Honors College with an honors thesis in media studies.
Dr. Hussein previously lectured at the Rutgers School of Social Work, where she taught at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the following core areas: Research Methods I & II, Human Behavior in the Social Environment I & II, and Writing for Social Workers. Her background in instructional design includes designing creative, learner-centered products that advance the knowledge and skills of child welfare and early childhood professionals. She brings knowledge of best practices in adult education and innovative methods for learner engagement, as well as subject matter expertise in supporting children and engaging families on a wide range of social issues. At Temple University, Dr. Hussein serves on the Curriculum Committee, is a course lead for several courses including Human Behavior in the Social Environment I & II and Seminar in Social Work Practice I & II, and is a member of the Anti-Oppressive Committee.
