Biography
Tim Patterson is an assistant professor in Teaching and Learning at Temple University. His primary scholarly interest unites two important strands of the research on social studies education: teacher education and global studies. He has conducted studies on various factors that condition, constrain, and otherwise influence the pedagogical decision making of pre- and in-service social studies teachers. His dissertation research brought him to China, where he investigated the learning of American teachers participating in a 3-week study abroad program. He has also investigated teacher preparation in museums, archives, historical homes, and other cultural institutes, historical children’s literature, and the identity development of early career social studies teachers. More recently, his focus has shifted to concerts, film festivals, and other global events as venues for enactments of global citizenship education. His research has been published in such journals as the Journal of Teacher Education, Teachers College Record, Theory & Research in Social Education, The British Journal of Educational Studies, The History Teacher, and The Social Studies.
Patterson also holds a courtesy appointment in the Department of History and is an affiliated faculty member in the Center for Public History at Temple University. Before joining the faculty at Temple University he was an Assistant Professor at Sacred Heart University, an instructor at Teachers College, Columbia University, and a social studies teacher in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. In 2017 he was the recipient of the award for outstanding undergraduate teaching in the College of Education and Human Development. In 2021 he was recognized by the College of Education and Human Development for his outstanding advising and mentorship.
